Why does Bidart's coat of arms evoke whaling?
Bidart experienced significant economic development from the XNUMXth century, like most of the coastal villages in the south of the Bay of Biscay from Capbreton to Bermeo. The massive presence of whales, visible from the cliffs, fueled the courage and daring of men. The hunting of these animals has generated intense maritime activity, shipbuilding, hunting and fishing, product processing, trade, etc. Bidart was even the first port in the Basque Country.
A short hike on the south coast of Bidart will allow you to imagine this epic.
