How to come to
Ball games are the most ancient and most widespread. The Greeks called it "spherical", the Romans "pila" and Old France "palm". Over the course of the centuries the Basques modified the game of palm so that it became a game specific to them. All these games were originally played with the naked hand, between two opposing teams, face to face (the direct game).
In the Basque country the conception of a new, livelier ball (pelote), and with stronger rebounds led inevitably to a new form of the game : the players are placed side by side and hit the ball towards the wall for their opponents to hit back (indirect game).
From this new way of playing came the name "Pelote Basque"….while the Basques have always called their game by a single name "Pilota". There exists many forms of the game depending on the court, the type of instrument and type of ball used.
During the summer in Bidart you can watch games of "main nue" (naked hand) and "grand chistera" (with a wickerwork glove) which is the speciality of the local club "Kostakoak" which has produced some grand champions.
